Coming Out

"Coming out" as LGBT and a humanist can be a struggle for many, especially if you were raised in a religious tradition. There are a number of resources that can help you with announcing your identity to friends and family members.

• Austin Cline, who runs the Atheism Guide on About.com, has an article titled, "Coming Out to Your Family: Should You Reveal Your Atheism?"


• David Niose, president of the American Humanist Association, published an article in the May-June 2006 issue of the Humanist magazine on "Humanism and the Gay Community."


• Jacqueline Lavanche, writer for the Boston Atheism Examiner, posted on "Coming Out Atheist vs. Coming Out Gay" and addresses the similarities between the two.


• Jimmy Li, a student at Harvard University, wrote about "Coming Out of the (Atheist) Closet" in the Harvard Crimson.
